Shrek, the Third

1:54 am CGI & Rendering, Reports, films

20070704_pussinboots.pngI went to see Shrek 3 with Lisa today (actually yesterday) at the Royal English Cinema in Graz. Actually that movie theater is not more “Royal” than any other theater, only they run the flicks in English rather than dubbed in German (and sometimes rather poorly). And especially Shrek 3 is one movie that you want to see with the original audio track.

I won’t go through the movie in detail but provide you more or less with some things that caught my attention during the movie (without spoilers of course!).

The Royal features three different theaters, the big one, the “Royal” where blockbusters such as Ocean’s Thirteen are currently running, the small one, the “Graffiti” with nice graffities on its walls where they play children’s movies or very artsy stuff. Last film I watched in there was Woody Allen’s Scoop with Lisa. But Shrek 3 was played in the med-sized theater called “Matrix”1. Still it’s pretty small and Lisa and I had to switch to the 3rd row to have some kind of movie-theater-experience rather than a watching-tv-from-the-computer-experience. Unfortunately sitting that close to the screen made it obvious that it was slightly out of focus, but it wasn’t really obvious until the credits.

What surprised me was that the actual CGI stuff was done by a relatively small amount of people in comparison to Pixar… on Shrek 3 there were only a couple of modelers, not more than eight (!) and less than 20 animators.

The movie is well written in general, although you might miss a huge showdown like in Shrek 2 but still it’s worth it. Even the soundtrack is okay: Not a single Justin Timberlake song on it — and he dubbed Artie. So I think that adds to the quality of this film.

Here’s a short checklist you might want to keep in mind when watching the movie

  • There’s an homage to Kubrick in the film. Find it and giggle.
  • Find out what character is dubbed by Larry King and giggle when you know.
  • How many scenes involving fire and flames are in the film? Is it possible that someone’s very proud of it?
  • Ain’t the ocean shader just wonderful? See a still here
  • How many unicorns are in the movie?
  • How many times is Pinocchio lying

Have fun!
